Community Meetings Set to Discuss Proposed SSA

For several months the Jefferson Park Chamber of Commerce and an advisory committee made up of local property owners has been working with the City of Chicago's Department of Economic Development to explore the idea of creating a Special Service Area (SSA) in 2016.  SSA's are local tax districts that fund expanded services and programs through a localized property tax levy within contiguous areas. The enhanced services and programs are in addition to those currently provided through the City.

SSA-funded projects typically include but are not limited to public way maintenance and beautification; district marketing and advertising; business retention/attraction, special events and promotional activities; auto and bike transit; security; fašade improvements; and other commercial and economic development initiatives. The City contracts with local non-profits, called Service Providers to manage SSAs. Mayorally-appointed Commissioners for each SSA district oversee and recommend the annual services, budget and Service Provider Agency to the City. There are currently 53 active SSAs in Chicago.

The proposed SSA district includes properties on Milwaukee Avenue between Montrose and the viaduct at the Kennedy Expressway and on Lawrence Avenue between Austin Avenue and the viaduct at the Kennedy Expressway.

Please join us to learn more about the proposed district on either Thursday, May 14 or Thursday, May 21.  Both meetings will be held at The Copernicus Center, Kings Hall - 5212 W. Lawrence Avenue.  Meetings will begin at 630 sharp.

The advisory committee will take community feedback into consideration and make any needed changes to the application.  The anticipated plan is to submit our application to the City of Chicago for consideration by the June 12, 2015 deadline.
